Should you grit or salt against ice?

Salt hard surfaces such as asphalt and concrete paving when the temperature is between zero and around minus seven degrees – then the ice melts away. Use sand or grit when it is colder, on natural stone, wood and gravel, near flower beds and where salt would damage concrete or plants. On steps and entrances, stone chippings are often used as they give grip without melting into fresh ice.
