Spring grit sweeping: clearing grit and sand after winter
The winter's gritting leaves kilos of grit behind. If it stays, it ends up in the lawn where it damages the mower, in the flower beds and in the stairwell. Spring grit sweeping is winter's last task and spring's first.
Short answer
When should the grit be swept up after winter?
When the snow is gone and the risk of night frost is over, in Stockholm usually from late March to mid-April. Grit and sand are then swept up from driveways, paths, steps, courtyards and car parks before they are trodden into lawns, flower beds and stairwells. Service Plus sweeps by machine on larger surfaces and by hand on steps and along edges, collects the grit and takes it away. Spring grit sweeping is included in our winter contracts and can be booked together with the spring cleanup.
What does spring grit sweeping include?
We sweep and collect all the grit and sand spread during winter:
- Machine sweeping of courtyards, car parks and longer paths
- Hand sweeping of steps, entrances, edges and around obstacles
- Collection and removal of grit and sand
- Clearing grit from drains and gutters where needed
- Sweeping of pavements along the property
Why not wait until summer?
Grit that is still there in May ends up in the lawn at the first mowing, throws up dust when it dries and makes stairwells and entrances dirty all spring. The municipalities sweep their streets in April for the same reason. Sweeping the courtyard straight after the snow melts is quicker and cheaper than picking grit out of flower beds in June.

Is spring grit sweeping included in the winter contract?
Yes. All our winter contracts end with spring grit sweeping once the snow is gone. It can also be booked separately.
Does spring grit sweeping qualify for the RUT deduction?
Yes, for private individuals. Sweeping and cleaning on the plot of your home qualify for a RUT deduction of up to 50% of the labour cost. Removal is not covered.
Can the grit be reused?
Swept-up grit is mixed with dirt and salt and is rarely suitable for new gritting. We take it to recycling.
